Description More about this product
The Olympic Flame Centenary Coin is a commemorative issue created to celebrate 100 years of the Olympic Games.
The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II at age 64, shown facing right and wearing the royal diadem, necklace, and earrings. Crafted in 22-karat yellow gold, the coin offers both durability and a rich, lustrous appearance, emphasizing its value as a collectible. Issued by Canada with a face value of 175 dollars, it is recognized as official legal tender.
Struck in 1992, the coin commemorates the centenary of the Olympic Flame, an enduring symbol of peace, unity, and international friendship. The obverse includes the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “D.G. REGINA,” “175 DOLLARS,” and the year of issue, with engraving by Dora de Pédery-Hunt.
The reverse presents a detailed and symbolic depiction of the Olympic Flame, shown as a burning torch surrounded by several faces reaching toward it—an artistic representation of shared aspiration and the spirit of the Games. This side was engraved by Ago Aarand from a design by Stewart Sherwood.
Along the coin’s edge appears the traditional Latin Olympic motto: “CITIUS, ALTIUS, FORTIUS” (“Faster, Higher, Stronger”). The coin was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa as part of an international series created for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to honor the Olympic centennial.
Struck in high relief, the coin displays intricate detailing and the fine craftsmanship typical of significant commemorative pieces. Its limited mintage and high gold content enhance its desirability for collectors and investors alike.
The Olympic Flame Centenary Coin stands as a beautifully designed and historically meaningful tribute to the lasting legacy of the Olympic Games, and it remains a prized acquisition for numismatists and Olympic memorabilia enthusiasts.
